Implante cerebral permite olhos voltarem a enxergar novamente
Cientistas na Espanha conseguiram fazer uma paciente cega enxergar ao estimular diretamente o córtex visual de seu cérebro através de um implante neural.
O sistema usa uma “retina artificial” ligada a um par de óculos que detecta a luz na frente de seu usuário. A luz é então processada em sinais elétricos e enviada para uma série de microeletrodos implantados no cérebro do usuário, permitindo que o usuário “veja” a luz captada pelos óculos.
Os pesquisadores testaram o sistema em uma mulher de 57 anos que estava completamente cega há mais de 16 anos. Durante o experimento, ela finalmente conseguiu identificar formas e silhuetas detectadas pela retina artificial.
Os autores acrescentaram que o paciente foi capaz de “identificar algumas letras” e até ” reconhecer os limites dos objetos”.
Embora alguns possam ter escrúpulos sobre a ideia de implantar eletrodos em seus cérebros, a equipe por trás do estudo descobriu que o sistema de retina artificial não afetou a área do cérebro ao redor do córtex visual, sugerindo que o sistema é bastante seguro.
O sistema também exigiu um nível relativamente baixo de atividade elétrica quando comparado a outras matrizes de implantes neurais .
O sistema acabou sendo removido do cérebro da mulher após seis meses de uso. Obviamente, mais pesquisas são necessárias antes que essa tecnologia seja lançada em maior escala.
